In UC0079, during the One-Year War, Char Aznable (an alias for Cassoval Rem Daikun, son of the martyred colonial leader and philosopher Jion Daikun) was Jion's ace pilot, the arch-nemesis of Amuro Rei, pilot of the first Gundam. Char recruited a powerful Newtype named Lalah Sun, eventually resulting in a love triangle between her and the two adversaries. In the heat of battle, Lalah threw her Mobile Armor in front of Char to protect him from Amuro's attack, resulting in her death. It was a tragedy that would mark the two men for the rest of their lives, forever ensuring their hatred of each other. At the end of the war, Char slipped away from the Battle of A'Bao A'Qu and vansihed.

In UC0087 (Zeta Gundam), Char re-emerged, this time calling himself Quattro Bagina, a Lieutenant in the AEUG. He and Amuro, who joined the Karaba, briefly set aside some of their differences in order to work together to overthrow the Titans. Once again Char vanished at the Battle of Zedan's Gate, the Titan's new name for A'Bao A'Qu.

In UC0093, Char makes his counterattack. He reappears as the new leader of the Neo-Jions. He is consumed with his father's philosphies and the desire to end his grief over Lalah's death, and has lost all sense of proportion or compromise. Char plans to destroy all remaining life on Earth by bombarding it with asteroids, in the mad hope that Amuro, now a member of the Federation's special Lond Bell taskforce, will try to stop him.

This movie represents the conclusion of the original Gundam saga, consisting of the original series, Zeta Gundam, and Double Zeta Gundam. Although you can watch this movie without having seen these three series, one should at least be familiar with the events of those series first.
